Laser Show Controller

The Lasergraph DSP is a specialized computer with its own proprietary system software which was developed for the particular requirements of laser projections. The two main components  - hardware and software - are developed and manufactured at our premises. It is designed for use in a network.

Since its introduction to the market more than 25 years ago this laser show controller has been developed continually, so today the Lasergraph DSP Mark 2 is an outstanding control system for laser show and multi-media applications.

A Lasergraph DSP with Mark2 Licencor level can generate a temporary editing license for one or more Playback unit(s) in a network. The Playback unit(s) immediately become(s) (a) fully editable Lasergraph DSP(s) as long as the network connection exists.
This licensing mechanism is completely automated in a local network with hundreds of DSP Playback devices and any Lasergraph DSP Mark 2 Licensor. No user input is necessary!

Software Updates

LaserAnimation provides free software updates for 12 months (from date of delivery) for each newly bought Lasergraph DSP.

After 12 months it is necessary to purchase a software upgrade. For this the following conditions apply:

  • An upgrade of all releases until the end of the current year costs 300 EUR (excl. VAT) per Lasergraph DSP.
  • For clients with several Lasergraph DSP controllers there are volume discounts.


State OF The Art Laser Show Controller Made In Germany

Ever since it was first publicly presented the laser has been seen as the jewel of light creation. Ever since no other light medium has fascinated viewers in the same way as laser light. Its special characteristics such as the immense intensity and brilliant colors are what puts everyone under a spell. Small wonder that the laser has been used for years as a medium for spectacular performances of all kinds, to draw attention and to impress audiences.

Laser is special in itself, however, it becomes an impressive medium especially when moving beams and pictures are projected in combination with music. In addition to a laser source, the most important requirement for this is a control computer - laser show controller - in order to integrate pictures, texts, beams and music into a laser show.


As one of the first companies world wide LaserAnimation offered a controller purpose-built for laser projections, the Lasergraph DSP. Since its introduction to the market more than 20 years ago this laser show controller has been developed continually. A lot of requests and suggestions of professional users have been integrated and continually flow into the development.

Users all over the world value it as an extremely reliable show controller which on the one hand can make the laser dance in pictures and beams and which on the other hand can be used to integrate a whole range of other event- and stage technology devices into a performance.

Highest Reliability

    Highest reliability, which is absolutely essential especially for professional events, is guaranteed through use of carefully selected hardware components, the well proven real-time operating system and strict quality checks during production in connection with extensive test under realistic conditions.

Short Boot Time

    The Lasergraph DSP Mark 2 is ready for use seconds after it is turned on, it does not require a long time to boot. This quick system start as well as stable operation are possible because the operating system is stored in the internal flash memory.

Live Operation without PC or Mac

    Laser shows are programmed and edited on a Windows® PC or an Apple® Mac computer connected to the network and running the terminal software "LGRemote".
    A PC or Mac is not necessary for starting finished shows. For instance, when a control console is connected shows can very simply be started and played back using the live- and playback interface "jr. Live". Other media systems connected to the DSP via RS232 or ethernet can also be used to start a show.
    The laser show runs completely independently of the PC or Mac. Possible crashes of the computer systems have no effect at all on the live performance of the show.

Complete Real-Time Operation

    This ability has always been seen as the most important feature of the Lasergraph DSP. The effect of any editing is immediately visible in laser on the screen or in the preview window of the programming interface - really WYSIWYG!

    All calculations for scaling, deformation, shifting, rotation, for all animations, classic frame by frame animation as well as computer aided animations such as morphing, abstracts, color cycles ... are executed in real-time.
    For animations only key frames are created, intermediate pictures are automatically calculated during playback. The advantage of this concept of calculation is the small amount of data needed, the show files are considerably smaller over all. This is a definite advantage of the Lasergraph DSP, especially when playing back shows over a network.

Unbeatable Color Management

    The color brilliance of the Lasergraph DSP is unmistakable compared to other show controllers.
    This obvious difference is due to the highly sophisticated color management of the Lasergraph DSP which is the result of many years of experience with laser as a projection medium.

    The bright colors in a picture, in color movements such as color cycles or abstracts, the wonderfully smooth color transitions or the brilliantly colored beams as well as the excellent fade-out of each respective color are a trademark of the Lasergraph DSP and are obvious to any spectator.

    The Lasergraph DSP has six color outputs which means that it supports laser with up to six different color lines. The laser colors can be adjusted to fit any established laser system. The colors for picture editing are defined through palettes for which countless (more than 281 trillion) colors are available. These palettes can always be adapted in real-time for soft transitions, dimming, cross-fades, color cycles and so on.

Crisp Projections

    A separate digital signal processor (DSP) is used for the output which guarantees an outstanding picture quality of the scanned picture.
    The DSP allows scanning rates of up to 250kHz, even higher scanning rates are possible for color modulation in patterns.

    The pictures sent from the DSP to the laser projector are automatically optimized. The system automatically inserts waiting times for blank changes so the picture achieves the desired geometry.

    Since all pictures are vector graphics only the anchor points have to be entered when a picture is created. Points on straight lines can be omitted. If two anchor points are very far apart, intermediate points will be interpolated. If not all points are required, for instance if picture size is decreased, the number of points will automatically be reduced. This dynamic interpolation considerably reduces the flicker rate, avoids hotspots and makes the best possible use of the scanner speed.
    Interpolation, point reduction and blank delay can be set locally (for individual pictures) and globally. Globally in this case means the picture output can be ideally adjusted to the currently used laser projector.

Unparalleled Interactivity

    Nowadays laser projections are no longer displayed as "pure" laser shows. Laser is increasingly integrated into complex multi-media shows as a striking effect. Combining the most varying media and effects into a meticulously planned show is one of the most challenging tasks a controller has to master.
    The faultless music-synchronized coordination of laser beams and graphics, light-, water- and pyro-effects as well as video projections can be professionally realized thanks to the versatile control options of the Lasergraph DSP.
    For instance a DMX console can be connected to the DMX input for controlling lighting systems or other stage- and event devices together with lasers. A MIDI keyboard can also be connected for simple live control of lasers and effects.

Unique Network Capabilities

    Several Lasergraph DSP Mark 2 can be connected with other computers (DSPs, PCs, Macs) in a network.
    Devices connected to one DSP (DMX, MIDI, SMPTE, fader board...) will then be available to other DSPs in the network. For instance the SMPTE timecode of a SMPTE timecode source connected to DSP1 can also be used by DSP 2, 3 or X in the network. This offers the huge advantage of greatly simplifying the cable connections, especially for big events with many controllers and peripheral devices.

    Another important advantage is the fact that each Lasergraph DSP Mark 2 processes and stores all data locally. This makes it possible to connect almost any number of DSPs in a network and use them in a show without encountering delays when loading, editing or saving.

    In addition to operation in a substantial network the DSP can also be connected to a modem for remote maintenance.

The following important protocols are supported for network operation:

  • TCP/IP
  • UDP
  • Art-Net (TCP/IP based ethernet protocol for transmitting DMX512)
  • OSC (Open Sound Control - message based protocol for communication between computers, synthesizers and other multi-media devices)



The Lasergraph DSP provides all important interfaces required for a modern show controller:

  • ILDA Out for connecting a laser projector according to ILDA standard
  • LAN for integration into an ethernet network
  • SMPTE (LTC) In / Out standard timecode interface for connecting studio devices (e.g. audio- or video technology) which support the SMPTE timecode
  • Midi In / Out for connecting devices which use the Midi signal, e.g. Midi keyboard or Midi controller "OHM64"
  • DMX In / Out for connecting devices according to DMX standard, e.g. light console, dimmer, fog machine and other effect devices
  • RS232 (2x) standard connectors for instance for remote control, modem or media controller (Medialon Manager®, Wings Platinum®)
  • RS485 for connecting a fader board
  • Sync In for frame-precise synchronization of the laser output with video signals or shutter goggles

The "Mark 2 Production Suite" provides you with highly powerful and comprehensive software components for the creation of an impressive laser- and multi-media show. The suite comprises the following components:

  • LGRemote: Terminal software for remote controlling the Lasergraph DSP Mark 2 under Windows as well as under Mac OSX

Features Lasergraph DSP Software

The heart of the "Production Suite" is the proprietary operating system which was especially developed for laser projections and can only be installed on a Lasergraph DSP Mark 2.

Its intuitive design provides a quick entry so that first class results can be achieved in very few steps. Immensely powerful tools allow an exceedingly creative use of the laser medium. Numerous functions for integrating connected devices and media such as DMX light consoles, fog machines, audio, video, MIDI keyboard and other media systems make it easy to create a complete high-class laser- and multi-media show.

The Lasergraph DSP software is continually developed and released in close cooperation with the users.


The Picture Editor "Piced" as the Basis for Creating Pictures


The picture editor is structured like a three-dimensional CAD system. It creates two- and three-dimensional laser pictures which can be displayed either in the classic X/Y/Z mode or in perspective.

It offers a simple way to generate new pictures or texts and to edit existing or imported pictures. Numerous powerful tools and visual editing aids are available. For comfortable editing the zoom can be adjusted from 25% to 5000%.


The Animation Editor Bringing Single Pictures To Life


This well laid-out editor is used to quickly and easily generate frame-by-frame animations from individual pictures and to edit existing animations.
Individual pictures or whole sequences can be cut, copied or inserted. The transitions between the pictures are clearly visible in the enlarged frame view.

The editor can be opened more than once allowing very efficient use.


The Trickfilm Editor as the Central Block for Creation of a Laser Show


This significant component is used to develop a complete show. This editor provides numerous mighty tools for the creation of fascinating laser effects and the time-synchronized combination with selected music as well as connected effect- and multi-media devices.

Pictures and/or animations are integrated into a trickfilm. Up to four trickfilms can be edited simultaneously and synchronized precisely through the timescript.

The exact timecode control in the DSP manages the timecode synchronization with connected devices and media in the network.

Many powerful tools are available for processing generated or existing pictures and/or animations and for creating attractive picture effects such as:

  • color cycles, dynamic color changes
  • transformations
  • morphing one picture into another
  • for realistic display
    - of objects: hidden line + hidden surface technology (SWC)
    - for three-dimensional effect: depth cueing + XY cueing
  • soft blanking for fading lines out smoothly
  • sparkle effect (short flashes in a picture)
  • movements of objects in space
  • running texts
  • step-by-step appearance and disappearance of pictures (also for more than one picture)
  • creation of abstracts and much more

A trickfilm consists of a sequence of commands which are simply inserted at the desired spot and which have different adjustable parameters. Parameters can be fixed values, variables or curves. Fluid motions can for instance be achieved by selecting a curve as a movement parameter. An integrated curve editor is available for editing the course of the curve.


With the abstract generator the DSP offers a comfortable tool for creating abstracts. Abstracts are dynamic laser pictures which permanently change form and color and have an almost hypnotic effect on viewers.
Behind this there is a sophisticated calculation system with oscillators for the movements of the shapes and colors. The integrated "Colorcycle Editor" is used to influence the colors for the abstracts.



Stereoscopic 3D Laser Projections

The Lasergraph DSP Mark 2 makes excellent stereoscopic 3D laser projections possible. These can be viewed with 3D goggles of either the anaglyph- or full color method. Additionally the use of shutter goggles is supported which can frequently be found at stereoscopic film- and video projections. When these shutter goggles are used the DSP synchronizes the laser output with the external shutter signal of the goggles.

The software makes arranging laser effects with audio or video files simple and clear. All entries of a Lasergraph DSP show can be integrated into the time axis and synchronized with an audio- or video file. The clearly structured program window provides an exact overview of the temporal interaction of laser, music and video.

Excellent Laser Output Preview


The program component "LGPreview" allows the user to realistically simulate the laser output of the laser projector with or without fog.
In order to get a visual impression of the final show setup, for instance on a stage, bitmaps can be integrated into the preview so the effect of the laser under the given conditions can be judged in advance.


jr. Live!

The "jr. Live!" is a comfortable playback and live user interface especially designed for live applications for instance in discotheques, clubs or other venues. It is perfectly suited for playing back a show using a control console with touch screen or monitor connected to the DSP.


Additionally the "Live Mode" implemented in the "jr. Live!" offers the possibility to simply create laser pictures, running texts, effects or even complete shows. The "Live Mode" is a useful instrument for laser show beginners to try out the creative use of the laser medium.




This application turns the Lasergraph DSP Mark 2 into a DMX controlled laser/light controller. The laser output can be influenced using a DMX light console connected to the DSP - position, rotation, color, brightness and so forth can be changed completely without programming on the DSP.
In addition DeeMagiX provides a large number of predefined effects which allow countless variations of the included gobos, animations and running texts, such as automatic and manual rotation of planes, moving tunnels up and down and much more.
The "GoboWizard" (PC software) is available for simple replacement of gobos and animations.


DeeMagiX is especially well suited for all occasions where the combination of light and laser is to form an effective symbiosis, making it easily possible to use the advantages of the DMX512 protocol, for instance in clubs or discotheques, at music events, for illuminating buildings...


Perfect Laser Pictures from Standard Graphics Files Using proTize max and proTize converter

The proTize software family comprises the professional tools "proTize max" and "proTize converter" for creating high quality laser pictures out of standard graphics files.

"proTize max" is an efficient plug-in for the 3 ds maxTM software package which is often used by graphics designers, VFX artists and other visualization specialists.
The conversion technology of the "proTize max" is simple yet ingenious. Similar to a cartoon renderer it generates a silhouette (outline) from a 3D object.
"proTize max" can be used to immediately display a single 3D picture, such as a logo, with a laser. But complex 3ds maxTM scenes can also be rendered in laser immediately so that it is possible to create a complete laser show out of 3ds maxTM scenes only. One example for this is the award-winning laser show "Burt the Turtle". It was completely created in 3ds maxTM and rendered with "proTize max".


The "proTize converter" can be used for comfortable conversion of standard bitmap and vector graphics files. Pictures, already existing or created with a standard graphics program, can quickly and easily be converted into laser pictures and provided for laser output.


First Class Laser Show Preview on the PC

The Lasergraph DSP Mark 2 provides laser show designers with a special tool called "Lpv Creator" for recording complete laser shows like a video. This laser show preview can then be displayed on a PC. This is especially useful for presentation purposes with clients or for conceptual work prior to an extensive event.
A show recorded with the "Lpv Creator" is provided in the Lpv Format. This is a proprietary format developed for displaying Lasergraph DSP Mark 2 shows on a PC.

For displaying Lpv shows the Lpv-Player is available which is similarly easy to install as other media players but which provides typical tools for a laser preview.

Realizzer 3D


The Realizzer 3D makes it possible to simulate a complete light show almost photo-realistically in real time on the PC. The software comes with a device library and numerous 3d models (truss, deco, stages etc.).

Complete laser and video installations can be simulated with the Pro und Ultimate versions of the Realizzer. It is also possible to import specially created 3D models in more than 20 formats (OBJ, 3DS, DXF, etc.)

The simulation can be connected to any DMX enabled light control without any difficulty. For this well-known interfaces such as ArtNET and SyncroNet are available. A separately available USB-DMX interface (USBone) also makes it possible to directly receive DMX.

Laser Disable Button


The "Laser Disable Button" is a special button which is used to disable the laser output on one or more Lasergraph DSPs over the Ethernet.

Since all communication is done over the network no extra cables are necessary.
If more than one Laser Disable Button is used the buttons can be placed at different locations (e.g. director's box and backstage).

In addition to the Laser Disable Button the software "Laser Disable" is available which can be installed under Windows® or Mac® OS X®. This allows grouping several Lasergraph DSPs and turning these on or off independent of each other if necessary.

The ADREM adapter makes it easy to convert analog SMPTE timecode to midi timecode. The USB interface provides the MIDI timecode to the PC which can be read by the LGServer software. In the setup menu of LGRemote, the MIDI timecode can be selected and set as the timing signal for the Lasergraph DSP.
