Denizens was a real-time laser projection and sonification of vine frequencies and the result of a year of interdisciplinary research combining data analysis, biology, laser projection, music, video, and philosophy. Denizens was a multimedia installation that explored innovative methods of capturing and preserving the unique frequencies and visual nature of vines and, as an interface between science, art and technology, was intended to open up a new perspective on the landscape of the Tuscan Potentino region. Understanding the language or vocabulary of plants through their frequencies is a new and complex endeavor, presented here with the help of sound, video and laser light.
The frequencies recorded in the plants, which represent changes in electrical conduction, are influenced by underlying electrochemical reactions that were measured with electrodes attached to the leaves. The measured frequencies were translated into light and sound. The laser projections were realized with the help of a PHAENON accurate 10 from LaserAnimation Sollinger.
The multimedia project was realized by the Berlin-based Argentinian digital artist and industrial designer Lucas Gutierrez. Together with Charlotte Horton & Otis Springer (www.potentino.com) with the support of Friends of Potentino. Featuring the Cardellini del Fontanino — Polyphonic singing from Monte Amiata.
Lucas activities range from lectures, workshops and audiovisual performances to video art projects that deal with the new paradigms of digital culture. We would like to thank Lucas Gutierrez for providing the visual material.
